Tuesday (Janaury 14): Introduction to Class, Websites & Following an Educator

What is due today?

  1. Nothing

What are we doing today?

  • Professor & Class Introductions

  • Overview of class: Course structure

  • Introduce Website design 

    • Wix, Weebly, WordPress, Google Sites, Blogger

    • Video overview of creating a website in wix. Make sure to select "design sites" in upper right for the free version. 

  • Introduce Following an Educator assignment

    • ​Cult of Pedagogy (also offers content in podcasts), Teaching Tolerance, Think Inclusive, Edutopia, Edudemic, The Superhero Teacher, Empowered Teachers, Five Foot One Teacher, Caffeinate and Educate, Believe They Can, Teacher Golz, Secondary Sara, Secondary English Coffee Shop, Find one yourself!

Thursday (January 16): Technology-based presentations, including Infographics and Memes  //  Lab 

What is due today?

​1. Create a Google Document for the Following an Educator and share with the professor (dmoos@gustavus.edu). Remember to share or copy content from who you're following on that Google Document as you go along through the semester (you should check the platform at least once a week).This Google Document should address the below questions (Due by 9:45 am today - start of class)

  • Who are you following?

  • Why did you choose this person? 

  • What platform will you use to follow this person (i.e. Twitter, their blog URL, a link to their podcasts, etc)?

  • What are your favorite posts? You may not not have any right away and your favorite posts may change throughout the semester. At the end of the semester, you should identify at least three favorite posts.

2. Identify a platform for your website or blog (see example websites from prior students at the top of this webpage). Make sure to save and "publish" your website. You will be given a unique URL once you publish. SAVE THIS URL AND PASTE IT IN OUR CLASS GOOGLE DOCUMENT FOR WEBSITES (Due by 9:45 am today - start of class). You will continue to revise your website during the semester - make sure to save and publish each time yo make revisions. ​

Tuesday (Janaury 21): Resumés  //  Lab

What is due today?

  • Infographic & Meme Assignment. See "Core Technology Skills" rubric under resources for details (due by 9:45 am am today).

  • Complete a draft of your website homepage (Image, brief introductory paragraph, and a quote related to teaching and/or a brief narrative of your teaching philosophy).

  • We will discuss creating a professional resumé

Thursday (Janury 23): Student Response/ Assessment Apps 

What is due today?

  1. Continue to edit your website (images, links, color choices, etc)

  2. Work on your resumé, final draft (uploaded to your website by February 13). 

  3. Continue "Following your Educator"! (Some questions to consider as you follow your Educator: What posts interest you? What surprises you? What questions do you now have about teaching?)

  • We will discuss core technology skill: Student Response/ Assessment Apps

    • Plickers: Efficient formative assessment. Here’s a video for Plickers.

    • Flipgrid; Video discussion platform. Here’s a video for Flipgrid. 

    • Kahoot: Engaging Assessment (quiz games). Here’s a video for Kahoot.

    • Socrative: On the fly assessment. Here’s a video for Socrative.

    • Padlet: Digital canvas; multiple students can post to the same board at the same time. Here’s a video for Padlet.

Thursday (February 6): Content Specific Apps. Today's class is asynchronous.  We will NOT meet in person.

What should you do for today's asynchronous class?

Your assignment for today's asynchronous work: Review the padlet for today's core technology skill (Content Specific Apps or Website). Click HERE for a padlet that provides an overview of content specific apps. Your asynchronous assignment is to add a content specific app/platform to your website.

Thursday (February 20): Artificial Intelligence in the Classroom Discussion #2

What is due today?

  1. ​Prepare for today's technology discussion on artificial intelligence in the classroom (ChatGPT)  (Due by 9:45 am TODAY; i.e. BEFORE the start of class)

    • Learn about ChatGPT by watching this video.

    • Learn about why some schools have decided to ban ChatGPT by watching this video

    • Learn about how some schools have decided to use by reading this article

    • Read this article OR this article OR this article for specific ways to use Artificial Intelligence in Education

    • Come to class prepared to discuss your view on ChatGPT and whether you think ChatGPT should be used in schools.

  2. Continue to edit your website (images, links, color choices, etc)

Tuesday (February 25): Last Class!

What is due today?​

  1. Artificial Intelligence Assignment. Use any platform you want (e.g. powerpoint, prezi, google slides, infographic, video (youtube, nearpod), etc)  to address the following questions. Make sure you upload this platform to your website by 9:45 am today. 

    • How would you describe ChatGPT/Artificial Intelligence to a teaching colleague?​

    • In your opinion, what is one potential benefit or specific use of ChatGPT/Artificial Intelligence in Education?

    • In your opinion, what is one potential challenge of ChatGPT/Artificial Intelligence in Education?

    • At this point, do you envision using ChatGPT/Artificial Intelligence in your future classroom? Why or why not?

What are we doing today?

  1. Discuss Standard 6K and uploading to TaskStream 

  2. Discuss remaining assignments (finalized website and Following an Educator Summary)

  3. Feedback on Class

FINAL ASSIGNMENTS due by Thursday, February 27 (11:59 pm)​

  1. Complete Following an Educator Summary on your Website 

    • Your final reflection or summary of take-aways and must include highlights of what you learned.

    • The summary should have its own button or tab on your websites (and be sure to include a link to the blogger you followed).

    • Some of you are including links to your favorite posts from that blogger, which is a great idea!

  2. Finalize your website 

  3. If you have been already been admitted to the Education Department: Complete and Submit Standard 6
